Engineering partnership with Manchester University
Staff from Manchester University’s Materials Performance Centre have been involved in the Engineering Education Scheme (EES) in collaboration with Abbey College Manchester.
The programme involved a team of four sixth form students from the college along with their Chemistry and Physics teachers working with three Engineers from the University for 6 months on a subject relevant to current research.
The objective of the project was to study the influence of grain boundary engineering on Stress Corrosion Cracking of brass in ammoniacal solutions, observed using new optical techniques such as Digital Imaging Correlation (Phew!).
Following the initial discussion, the Engineers regularly visited the college offering the students advice on project planning, experimentation and the anticipated outcomes of the work. The students also attended a 3 day residential workshop at the University where experimental work was carried out.
The experimental element of the scheme was run very successfully with the students enjoying their time at the University while completing their tasks.
