Independent city centre gallery Cube is a brilliant place to examine the city's hugely diverse architectural history, while the Museum of Science and Industry, situated in the oldest passenger railway building in the world, is a fun and thought-provoking introduction to the city which created the world's first ever computer.
The Manchester Museum houses over 6 million specimens and objects, from a 200 million-year-old tree fossil to the skeleton of a sperm whale. It gives the chance to examine ancient mummies, reconstructed skeletons of dinosaurs and hundreds of huge creepy-crawlies.

No cultural tour would be complete without a trip to Manchester Art Gallery. This impressive building houses some of the best exhibitions and installations in Britain. With over 25,000 objects on display, discerning art lovers will be hard pushed to find a better day out.
And, like all the museums and galleries in Manchester, entry is free. Manchester's theatres deliver wonderful entertainment all year round. The programmes of the Palace, Opera House, Royal Exchange and Library Theatres cover all genres, including ballet, opera, music, tragedies, comedy, thrillers and mysteries ensuring an evening out is impossible to beat anywhere.

A short tram journey from the city centre takes you to the Lowry. This is a quirky metal structure where the best in entertainment can be seen, together with galleries paying homage to the world famous LS Lowry and his matchstick-like portraits of factory workers and urban landscapes. A footbridge walk's away over the Manchester ship canal is the giant shark's fin shape that houses the impressive Imperial War Museum North.
