Abbey is a small college with a big choice of subjects and pathways. Some students are with us for four years, GCSE through to A levels. The sixth form attracts over half of our students. In addition our one year course includes A-level and GCSE retakes courses and students transferring to complete their Year 11 or Upper Sixth at Abbey.

A Level Retake

Fuad, Ben and Rick joined Abbey for the one year A-level retake programme to improve their grades for Medicine, Dentistry and History respectively. There were impressed with the high levels of teaching, regular tests and past paper practice. The course offered the flexibility to resit some modules in January.
Lower Sixth to Upper Sixth

Peter studied his GCSE’s at the International School in Bulgaria and wanted to take A-levels in England. Surfing the internet he located Abbey, rang our administration team and an interview was arranged to visit the college. He then enrolled for Business Studies, Economics and History A levels. With a career in Business in mind, he is at a Manchester University to read International Business.

Year 10 to Upper Sixth

Ross joined us in Year 10. His mother says his old school labelled him a “no hoper” and would not let him take separate sciences. At Abbey he gained eight A*-B grades at GCSE and is taking Chemistry, Geography and Maths at A-level. He is now at Leeds reading Mechanical Engineering.
Year 11 to Upper Sixth

Neera came as a resit GCSE student and in one year her grades improved from Ds and Es to A*-Bs. Taking Biology, Chemistry and Psychology at A level she hopes to own a line of pharmacies once she has completed a Pharmacy degree at Leeds University.
Upper Sixth One Year Transfer

Madeleine knew the competition for medical places was tough so to increase her changes of getting into medical school she moved to Abbey to complete her A2 and resit some AS units. Looking back Madeleine says “good teaching, UCAS guidance and support of new friends kept me on track”. She is at Leeds reading Medicine.
Success Second Time Around

Laura came to Abbey College having been recommended to us by a previous successful student. She came with a C in Chemistry, C in Physics and a B in Biology with the aim to be a vet. At Abbey College she was advised to re-sit the Chemistry and Physics and to take Geography from scratch. Her results with us were straight As. She applied to be a vet for the second time around and has done extremely well to now be studying at the Royal Veterinary College, London.
Out of college, she has gained the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s award and was a Millennium Volunteer. She has helped out on falconry courses, she has worked in the bird section of Chester Zoo and has worked on a family farm and has reared two goats. In addition to this she has a Community Award from the Wirral for two hundred hours voluntary work and she is a qualified Marine Mammal Medic. If that wasn’t enough she is also a coach for Tennis and Laura has achieved a Grade 8 in piano and Grade 6 in alto-sax.

Re-sitting A-levels at Abbey College Manchester has opened the door to her future in which she is so dedicated. Individual support helped her gain the required grades to realise her ambition.

Jane has also applied to be a vet. She was already at a London University reading for a Geography degree but had realised that she really wanted to be a vet. At that stage she had five A levels all grade A: General Studies, Economics, Geography, History and Psychology. Jane then came to Abbey College Manchester and studied three Science subjects from scratch in One Year achieving 3 straight As. Her voluntary work at a riding school, her experience at a wildlife hospital and her work in a veterinary practice have stood her in good stead.

With the support provided by experienced teaching and the benefit of small classes she succeeded in subjects that she first found challenging. She is now at Cambridge.
Starting the Lower Sixth Again

Oliver found the transition from GCSE to A level difficult so came to Abbey to re-start his A levels. He gained grades in ICT, Business Studies and Geography to get into Sheffield Hallam to study Business and Psychology. Study skills support throughout the sixth form helped him with the challenges of ICT coursework and the skills needed in the other disciplines.
  Off to Cambridge

Catherine moved to Manchester after her GCSEs and was looking for somewhere that would support her through her A levels and a Cambridge application. She is studying English Literature, French and Maths and holds an offer for Law at Downing College, Cambridge.
