InformationBiology, Chemistry & Physics
Each of the three sciences is split into 3 units. As shown in the table below, students can combine these either horizontally to be awarded GCSE Science and GCSE Additional Science (together these are the closest equivalent to the old dual award) or vertically to be awarded GCSE Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Each GSCE must include a centre assessed Investigative Skills Assignment (ISA) - see below.
Physics 1 + Biology 1 + Chemistry + ISA from any subject = GCSE Science

Physics 2 + Biology 2 + Chemistry 2 + ISA from any subject area = GCSE Additional Science

There are two levels of entry for each GCSE: Foundation (G-C) and Higher (D-A*). The minimum statutory requirement is for all students to be taught the content of single award GCSE Science.
Investigative Skills Assignment
The ISA's have replaced coursework and account for 25% of the marks in each GCSE. Students carry out an experiment during normal lessons, producing a results table and a graph. The table and graph are marked and the students then sit a 45min exam. Half the questions are on the students' own experiment and half are based on related data provided in the paper. Students take their tables and graphs into the exam. The ISAs can be taken at any time during the year. Students can sit several ISAs and submit the best marks towards their GCSEs but each GCSE requires a separate ISA.
