Unit 1: Physical Geography
Assessed through examination: 1 hour 30 min. This module
represents 37.5% of the total marks.
Options studied:
1. Restless Earth: Tectonic Hazards:
processes, landforms and impacts.
2. Water on the Land: River processes,
landforms and causes and impacts of flooding. Asks "Why are flood
events increasing?".
3. Weather & Climate: Focus on UK and
tropical climates and meteorological processes. Asks "Is weather
becoming more extreme?".
Unit 2: Human Geography
Assessed through examination: 1 hour 30 min. This module
represents 37.5% of the total marks.
Options studied:
1. Population change: Population growth,
greying populations and migration.
2. Changing urban environment: Why most of us
now live in cities, impacts of urban lifestyles, and
solutions.
3. Globalisation: What is it? Asks "How could
we reduce the gaps in living standards and the environmental and
political problems it causes?".
Unit 3: Local Fieldwork Investigation
You will design, research and carry out your own investigation which will be on our doorstep in Manchester's City Centre. The investigation will be based upon material covered in Unit 2: Changing urban environment. The write up will be done under controlled conditions in lessons and a workshop on the last day of the Spring term and the first day of the Easter break. This contributes 25% of the final mark.
