Heads of Faculty/Year


Marc Cronin

Marc has taught Sociology and Politics at Abbey College Manchester since 2005. He is the Head of the Upper Sixth Year and works with each student supporting them in their academic progress and personal development. He has a MSc. in Strategic Studies at University of Wales Aberystwyth and The London School of Economics. He is working towards a PhD in European Defence Strategy.

Marc is a fervent supporter of Liverpool FC and organises football for students at Abbey College on Friday afternoons.

Gary Brady

Gary came to Abbey College Manchester in 1998 and  is the Head of our GCSE Programme  and teaches Maths . He is a gifted mathematician who likes mathematical modelling and problem solving and has a way of making his students enjoy Maths.  Gary has a degree in Maths and Education from The University of Loughborough.

An enthusiastic sportsman who goes to the gym several times each week, Gary is a weightlifter and cyclist; he encourages the GCSE students to take part in sport each week and helps with football and badminton.

Gary has experience outside of Education working in the Banking Industry but he chose to come into teaching. Gary is married and has two daughters aged six and nine.

Fay Hinnighan

Fay has worked at Abbey since 2000 and is Director of the Faculty of Modern Foreign Languages and ESOL and Head of the International Foundation Programme. She teaches French, Spanish and ESOL.

Fay has studied French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese and Russian and has taught primary children and adults and everyone in between.

She has lived in France and Mexico and travelled widely visiting over fifty countries; her next big trip is Russia to China via Mongolia on the Tran Siberian then the Sky Train to Nepal.

Paul Kelly

Paul has worked as a Chemistry teacher at Abbey College since 2001 and last year he became the Director of our Science Faculty. He has a degree in Chemistry from UMIST (now part of the University of Manchester). Paul has worked as an examiner in GCE A level Chemistry for one of the major examination Boards.

As well as being a scientist, Paul is an expert craftsman and carves complex designs into wood and other natural materials and he is a skilled photographer.

Paul is married and met his wife at Abbey College Manchester where she worked in our Accounts Department.

Bob Leonard

Bob has worked at Abbey College since 2004 and is the Head of the Lower Sixth Year. Bob teaches History and Religious Studies at the college. He has a degree from the Open University in Classical Civilisation, History and Religious Studies and a Postgraduate Diploma in Religion and Education  in Contemporary Society from the University of Huddersfield . He is an examiner for GCE A level Religious Studies for a major examination board.

Prior to coming into teaching Bob worked in Transport Management. He is married with a son and two grown up daughters.

Julia Morris

Julia has been at Abbey College Manchester since 2004 and is Assistant Head of Curriculum and Head of Biology. She has developed a wide knowledge about medical and medically related degree courses and is able to give students excellent guidance on these.

Julia studied Biology at The Queen's College University of Oxford and is particularly interested in nutrition.

Before coming to Abbey College Julia taught in Zimbabwe, South Africa and Egypt. She is married and has a son aged three.

Anita Brotherton

Anita is in charge of our vocational programmes and is Course Leader of the BTEC Level 3 Business course.  She came to Abbey College in 2003 as Head of Business and then worked as an assistant  of sixth form.

Anita studied Business at Birmingham Polytechnic and spent seven years working in industry for IBM and BBH and so she has firsthand experience of marketing and management.

In 2009-10 Anita took a sabbatical year and obtained a Diploma in Careers Guidance from Manchester Metropolitan University.

Anita is married and in her spare time enjoys horse-riding , swimming , squash and gardening.

Annual Abbey College Fashion and Talent Show

Talented students from the college Manchester took to the stage recently to dazzle the audience with a unique display of eclectic talents in the college's annual charity Fashion/Talent Show in aid of Francis House Children's Hospice. It was a fantastic evening's entertainment.
