Abbey College Manchester has a new course for aspiring footballers
Abbey College Manchester Football Training with Academic Studies

Abbey College Manchester have launched an exciting new course for aspiring footballers in collaboration with International House. Based in Manchester, the geographical hub of UK football, boys aged 16 plus have the chance to study A levels or our International Foundation Programme whilst playing football every weekday afternoon.

Abbey College Manchester has an excellent reputation for delivering high quality Sixth Form Programmes for UK and international students in the heart of the city and International House has been delivering bespoke football training since 2006 making it the longest running private football academy in the UK. This new programme is a unique opportunity for students to gain qualifications for entry to top universities alongside intensive football training which could lead to playing professional or semi-professional football. It is vital for any student wanting to pursue their sporting ambitions to ensure they gain the best possible education.

What are the academic course options?

Students will be able to choose from the following educational pathways depending on prior attainment and level of English:

A levels (two or three years)
• Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics
• Business Studies, Economics and Mathematics

International Foundation Programme (one or two years, for international students only)
• Business Pathway (Business, Economics)
• Science Pathway (Biology and Chemistry)

These pathways will equip students to apply to a wide range of universities to pursue Science or Business related courses which could link to their sporting aspirations or they could apply for courses unrelated to sport. The subject combinations and qualifications offered allow students great flexibility as they move forward. Students will be taught in small classes (a maximum of 12 in each) and follow the routine and rigour of all Abbey College Manchester programmes.

The Football Academy
  • Professionally (UEFA) qualified and experienced football coaches; including Frank Sinclair (ex-Chelsea FC)
  • Structured daily coaching sessions (Monday to Friday afternoons) and individual player development plans and tutorials drive progress
  • Regular “Showcase Events” in front of invited scouts and coaches from every level of professional club from Premier League to semi-professional
  • Regular competitive match play with post-match video analysis
  • All players selected with regard to football ability, personal commitment and attitude
What is the daily routine?

Students will have academic classes each weekday from 9.00am until 12.40pm at the Abbey College Manchester campus. They will then have a three minute walk to International House where they will be transported at 1.30pm to the Nicholls campus for daily two-hour training sessions delivered by UEFA qualified coaches. After training, players are taken back to International House.

Students will be enrolled at the gym opposite Abbey College Manchester and can train during the twilight period from 4.40pm to 6.00pm, or alternatively will attend study/booster classes at the college.

How will the academy help students as players?

The academy is designed to give all players a professional quality football experience in the UK. Players train daily ‘like the professionals’, following a structured programme that mirrors the training pattern of the top UK clubs. Experienced UEFA qualified coaches, many of whom are ex-professional football players themselves, give players every opportunity to reach their potential. Players are given specialised dietary and fitness advice and play weekly fixtures against other academy teams and colleges. Further opportunities for players include visits to professional stadia and training facilities, guest coaching sessions delivered by current and ex-professionals and managers and, most importantly, showcase events at which players get to demonstrate what they can do in front of scouts from a host of league and non-league clubs. At the most recent event seven players were successfully identified by club representatives. Players who attend the academy will gain a full understanding of football in the UK, both on and off the field, equipping them with the knowledge and understanding to progress in the game, whether as a player, coach or in one of the many careers associated with football.
