Innovative Partnership to Benefit Abbey College Manchester’s Aspiring Medics

4th November 21

Abbey College Manchester has announced a pioneering new collaboration with the University of Buckingham, benefitting aspiring medical students and expanding the college’s thriving university partnerships programme.

The leading independent college has partnered with the dynamic university to deliver its Medicine Diseases and Society Module, providing unrivalled opportunities to students to ensure that they are better prepared for higher education and their future careers. The module will give students a robust grounding and valuable insight into what is expected of a medical student and equip them with valuable knowledge for their medical application.

As part of the accredited course, ambitious medics will explore current issues in healthcare, while developing their all-important presenting, writing and debating skills. Students will discuss the challenges facing the NHS and public health systems, the role of the media and the social determinants of health. They will also delve into the impact of behaviours and environment on health, and the challenges facing doctors and other healthcare professionals.

Dr Michael Norton from the University of Buckingham Medical School visited on 21st October to speak to the students about the course and what to expect.  Teaching has started this week, w/c 1st November.

Abbey College Manchester students have also benefitted from strong links with a number of other leading universities across the country, as the college continues to build upon and develop its partnerships. Recently, a group of A Level students who are applying for art-based courses participated in a portfolio masterclass with the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), with a second session scheduled to be held in the new year in conjunction with an illustration student from University West England.

Furthermore, sports students at the college will visit UCLan to utilise the extensive sports facilities whilst partaking in a variety of activities.

Abbey College Principal, Liz Elam, commented: “We are delighted to announce yet another addition to our thriving collection of university partners. This exciting collaboration with the highly-regarded University of Buckingham provides a unique prospect for aspiring medics here at Abbey College Manchester, and we look forward to seeing our students progress and benefit from this opportunity.
Our university partnerships help our students to prepare for life at university, allowing them to discover more about the subjects they are interested in studying at a degree level, while also ensuring that they have a competitive university application.”
