Inspection Reports

Abbey College Manchester is inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).

The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) is approved by the Secretary of State to inspect schools which are, or whose heads are, in membership of the associations which form the Independent School Council (ISC) and report to the extent to which they meet the Independent School Standards (‘the standard’) in the Schedule to the Education (Independent School Standards) Regulations 2014, including the National Minimum Standards for Boarding (‘boarding NMS’), where applicable.

Independent Schools Inspection - March 2026

This integrated inspection occupied a period of three continuous days in the college during March 2026.

The inspectors observed lessons, conducted formal interviews with students and examined samples of students’ work. They held discussions with senior members of staff and with representatives of the proprietor, observed a sample of the extra-curricular activities that occurred during the inspection period and attended registration sessions and assemblies. Inspectors visited boarders’ accommodation and looked at the medical facilities. The responses of parents and students to a pre-inspection questionnaire were analysed and the inspectors examined regulatory documentation made available by the college.

This report highlights many strengths which we are proud of, including:

  • Safeguarding is noted as a high priority across both school and boarding.
  • Clear direction given to students.
  • A welcoming environment for students, which helps them to study effectively, and for our boarders, provided a genuine ‘home from home’ feeling.
  • Strong preparation for the future with several subjects commended which we see reflected in the excellent university offers held by Year 13 students.
  • High levels of individual guidance and support including for international students.
  • Excellent relationships between staff and students, underpinned by the personalised pathways staff build for each student.
  • Positive student behaviour reflecting the respectful and supportive community we see every day.

Whilst the report highlights the strong academic provision and pastoral care in place, it also identifies a small number of compliance areas requiring attention:

  • Physical education to be compulsory in Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11)
  • Opportunity to play outdoors.
  • Leadership and oversight to ensure these areas are fully embedded.

Since the inspection, changes have already been made to meet the requirement for compulsory physical education in Key Stage 4. All Year 10 and 11 students now take part in weekly physical education, with Wednesday trips to the local sports centre. This provision will continue next academic year for Years 10 and 11. Optional sports activities for Years 12 and 13 also continue through Enrichment, alongside our sports programme.

Governors continue to provide oversight and have conducted their annual review following the inspection. This ensures the college continues to improve in all areas, including those the inspectors already found to be satisfactory.
