Gifted artist and Abbey College Manchester student Jedidah, has been highly-commended for her exceptional creative talent in a prestigious national art competition.

Jedidah, who studied A Levels here, achieved a much-coveted second-place prize at this year’s ISA National Art Competition for her hand-drawn masterpiece, ‘Imperfections’. The intricate portrait was entered into the ‘2D Art Individual Key Stage 5’ category, contending amongst tough competition from entrants across the country.

Jedidah progressed to the national final of the highly-anticipated challenge after securing the esteemed first-place prize in her category in the ISA Arts North regional competition.  The College celebrated further success in the regional heat, as a trio of students also secured runner-up prizes – Anastasia in KS5 Photography, Veronika for KS3/4 Photography and Cloris in the KS3/4 Textiles category.

Commenting on her artwork and experience Jedidah, who successfully gained a place at the University of Southampton studying Fine Art, said, “Before this painting, I hated paints because I had only worked with acrylic and gouache. But after I tried out oils to emulate the style of Margaret Bowland on this painting, I was so grateful that oil paints (and all the needed resources) were accessible at the college.

“What I enjoyed about my 2 years at Abbey College is the focus on individual students, as well as the space and resources provided, which allowed me to explore different media in my own time. This helped me gain confidence in expressing myself in different ways, and has encouraged me to never stop trying new things, because work can always be perfected with an open mindset. I also learned the value of developing my ideas (and the ideas of other artists) to make my art more meaningful to me and to viewers.”

Abbey College Manchester’s Principal Chris Randell added, “Jedidah is an incredibly talented and dedicated individual and we are delighted that her efforts have been recognised with this highly-regarded accolade.

At Abbey College Manchester we strive to help our Art and Design students to develop their practical skills, whilst encouraging expression and exploration of their own personal creativity. External award programmes and projects such as the ISA National Art Competition, present our students with the perfect opportunity to broaden their horizons beyond the classroom and put their skills, knowledge and imagination to practice.”

The ISA National Art Competition is an annual opportunity for schools and colleges to showcase the outstanding work of their students. There are many categories that cover different age groups and genres, from 2D art and drawing, to photography and fashion.
