A Level Results Day 2026: What to Expect and What to Do Next

4th August 26

Whether you’re feeling excited, nervous or somewhere in between, A Level Results Day is a major milestone. After months of hard work, it’s finally time to open your results and take the next step towards university, an apprenticeship or your future career.

The most important thing to remember is this: whatever your results, you have options. Many students achieve the grades they hoped for, while others may need to consider alternative pathways such as Clearing, a review of marking or retaking their A Levels. Whatever happens, there are plenty of opportunities to achieve your ambitions.

To help you feel prepared, we’ve put together this guide covering everything you need to know before Results Day, what to expect on the day itself, and what to do if your grades aren’t quite what you expected. Before you wake up on results day, take a few practical steps:

Before Results Day

A little preparation can make the day much less stressful. Before Results Day arrives, make sure you:

  • Know when and how you’ll receive your results.
  • Have your UCAS Hub login details ready.
  • Keep the contact details of your chosen universities to hand.
  • Have a notebook or phone ready to make notes if you need to speak to admissions teams.
  • Talk through different scenarios with your family so you feel confident whatever happens.

Being prepared means you can focus on making informed decisions, rather than rushing into them.

On the day itself, keep water nearby, stay calm, and prepare for either celebration or contingency planning.

If You Get the Grades You Wanted

Congratulations! If you’ve met the conditions of your university offer, your place should be confirmed through UCAS. Take time to celebrate your achievement before preparing for the exciting move to university.

If Your Results Are Better Than Expected

You may have more options than you realised. Some students choose to explore alternative universities or courses through Clearing if they decide they’d like to pursue a different opportunity. Take your time to consider what’s right for you before making any decisions and always speak to your school / college advisor.

If You Miss Your Offer

Don’t panic. Missing your grades doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve missed your chance of going to university. Many universities will still accept students who narrowly miss their offer, while thousands of students secure places through Clearing every year.

If your grades aren’t what you hoped for:

  • Check the status of your university offers in UCAS.
  • Contact your chosen university if you’re unsure about your place.
  • Explore available courses through Clearing.
  • Speak to teachers, careers advisers or admissions experts before making any decisions. They may advise you to have a paper remarked.

Considering an A Level Retake?

For some students, particularly those aiming for competitive courses such as Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Science, retaking A Levels can be the best long-term decision. Improving your grades can open up new university opportunities and strengthen your future prospects.

At Abbey College Manchester, our specialist A Level Retake programme combines expert teaching, small class sizes and personalised academic support to help students achieve significantly higher grades and progress to their first-choice university.  Visit our guide to retaking your A levels by clicking here.

Whatever your Results Day brings, remember that one set of results does not define your future. With the right advice, support and determination, there are always opportunities to achieve your goals.
