WHAT IS GCSE PHOTOGRAPHY?

GCSE Photography is a one year course which aims to develop students’ ability to see the world in a new way, translating visual ideas into successful outcomes using a camera. Students produce two separate portfolio projects and a final project set by the exam board, in which they will create a personal response to a theme during a two day exam. Previous experience in photography is not required, although students are expected to be keen, interested and ready to learn! The department has numerous facilities including:

  • A dedicated suite of Apple macs
  • Small studio space
  • A darkroom
  • A number of digital and film cameras, lenses, filters and tripods all available on loan.

Students will learn to use a DSLR, film cameras, the darkroom and Photoshop. The department takes advantage of the city centre location to go to the numerous galleries on our doorstep, as well as taking trips to Yorkshire Sculpture Park and once a year, a trip to a European city – in recent years we have visited Rome and Barcelona.
